| Introduction | Sierra Outdoor School is a residential outdoor education school located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, just east of Sonora, CA. At 4100 feet of elevation, our campus is part of the Stanislaus National Forest. We provide outdoor educational experiences in science, natural history, and resource management. At SOS, our principle focus is on fourth through sixth grade science standards. Beyond this, we strive to incorporate math, language arts, and social studies into the curriculum. Visiting schools may also choose less academically-minded courses which expose their students to group challenges, i.e. team building, or personal challenges, i.e. high ropes course. We are located in Gold Rush country, about 30 minutes from the historic town of Sonora, and two hours from Yosemite National Park. Our mission is to provide, in an outdoor setting, a science-based educational experience in which one learns how to respect one's self, others, and the environment. |
