Introduction Cathy Wheaton is bi-cultural Woodlands Cree. Cathy is a member of Lac La Ronge Indian Band. Cathy attended school in Flin Flon MB and her summers in northern Saskatchewan on the shore of Lac La Ronge. Cathy’s late mother Cora Bird was born on an unoccupied trapline on Lac La Ronge and her late father Harvey Wheaton worked in education and mining in northern MB. Cathy completed a degree in Native Studies at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon in 1992. Cathy has worked as an Aboriginal employment consultant, employment equity manager, internship program manager, university program administrator and labour education consultant. Cathy works as a northern Outreach Coordinator for the International Centre for Northern Governance and Development, a research centre at the University of Saskatchewan. Cathy enjoys traditional land activities and often fishes and hikes throughout the boreal forest. Cathy is learning to speak Cree and is a founder of First Language Speaking Project. Cathy has a BA in Native Studies as well as a Master degree in Northern Governance and Development. Her research interests are Aboriginal harvesting, Indigenous land ethic and sustainable development.
