Location The great Indianapolis neighborhood of Meridian Kessler, INDIANA, United States
Introduction I was the recipient of the 2007 Sam Adams Alliance National Tea Party Prize for effective community activism for the conception and implementation of the Indiana Tea Parties of 2007.
We went for repeal of property tax. Legislators who kicked the property tax can down the road for years got involved. We ended up with a 1% cap put into the Indiana Constitution along with undefined language allowing a 3% tax on personal property by a statewide referendum vote.
HFFT activists upset a well-funded mayoral campaign many times larger than the challenger. Mayor Ballard's victory was made possible by our work, and only because we we put action to thought and word, did we make it so. Everyone knows this to be truth.
Since then, our new mayor's word to us was betrayed. In his victory night address, he claimed it was the end of country club politics in Indianapolis. Months later he hosted $5,000 per person sit downs at a tony downtown steak house with developers who wanted access to taxpayer monies. He also accepted his free membership to the country club.
