Introduction Born in the middle of the depression. Grew up in a steel town & the country. During WWII there was food and gas rationing, air raid sirens. Mail & news were censored. Some Americans were imprisoned. Folks worked hard.. Life and friends were cherished & precious. No one locked their doors. Morals and values were very important. Folks believed in God. Millions enlisted without asking how short their tour of duty would be. Most folks were proud and strong but gentle, had courage. We all shared, most cared and no one whined. I lived part of the time with my grandparents. They did their best to love and shelter me from my abusive siblings and mother. They taught me appreciation, forgiveness, responsibility, kindness, values, love and more. Older now, crippled by illness including stage iv cancer, I remember the voices, sounds, aromas and scenes. Cousins, friends and those that never came home from the war. Stories include memories of childhood & youth in a generally stern but compassionate America, but sadly some tell of abuse. Growing Up in America has been an incredible experience and privilege. So journey with me to a time and place you may not have known.
