| Introduction | When I was 5 years old, my alcoholic father shot himself in the head in front of me and my mother. My alcoholic mother dragged my younger brother and me all across America, often living in our car. My mother died when I was 24, and my brother disappeared shortly after. I married young, had 2 children, got divorced, remarried, and had 2 more children. I got a Master’s degree in English and taught college for 12 years before deciding to homeschool my children, maintain my website, be a journalist and photographer, and write books (2 published cancer survival stories, science fiction, and fantasy). In 2006 I made the big mistake of seeking refuge from a troubled marriage--in New Zealand, with my 2 youngest children. I lost in NZ court and returned to California where I went through a bitter divorce and lost everything--because I had no lawyer and was addicted to prescription medications. My new husband Miguel made me choose between pills and him. I chose him--and my children. Having no health insurance, I went off everything “cold turkey” and landed in the hospital where I nearly died. Free of all medication for 16 months now, I am writing my story called “My 12 Steps.” |
