| Introduction | Flanagan began his journalism career writing sports stories for his high school newspaper when he was in the seventh grade. Some 50 years later, he has come full circle as "Distinguished Journalist in Residence" at Middle Tennessee State University's School of Journalism sharing what he has learned with the next generation of reporters and editors. He left The Associated Press in 2004 after more than 25 years, including 21 years as bureau chief in Nashville. As bureau chief, Flanagan directed coverage of major news stories in Tennessee and in 2000 he witnessed the first execution in Tennessee in more than 40 years. Flanagan is deeply involved in First Amendment issues, having served as Society of Professional Journalists' Sunshine chairman for Tennessee and founding member of the Tennessee Coalition for Open Government. |
