OccupationWe are a history museum
LocationFredonia, New York, United States
IntroductionThe museum originated in 1884 with the donation of the Barker Family home to the Village of Fredonia to be used as a public library. The house was built in 1821 by Darwin's father, Leverett Barker, who came to the area in 1805 and built a tannery. Found in the early library's minutes book it is written that famous author Samuel Clemens, known to the world as Mark Twain, attended some of the early library meetings and eventually donated a collection of books in order to help with the library's establishment. These books remain in the collection as well as the story of Twain's business partner, Charles Webster, who lived in Fredonia and married Twain's sister's daughter. Spend the day in a country atmosphere where you can have an authentic Victorian experience in the Village of Fredonia and learn about Victorian life and the history of this little piece of Western New York.
InterestsOur mission is to preserve the history of the Town of Pomfret including the villages of Fredonia, Laona, Lily Dale and Shumla.
