Introduction As a member of generation Why, I want, no, need to know the answers to the big questions. So periodically I take off and travel. I'm not sure if it's called "vagabonding" or "backpacking" or "hoboing" ... all I know is I'm going out there. In 2003 I celebrated the new year with some gutterpunks while sleeping under a bridge in downtown Atlanta. In 2005 I spent four months hitchhiking, then hopping freight trains, across the country. I spent the summer of '06 living at a primitive campsite on the south shore of Corney Lake in Kisatchie National Forest. All told, I've been through 26 states, been held up at gunpoint, robbed, assaulted with a hatchet, stabbed, and beaten to a bloody pulp. If no one's ever told you this before, I'll be the first: ghettos can be rough. But I'm gonna go back out there, just me and the rucksack, once again to try and conquer the unknown.
