Introduction | Martha Braithwaite appears to have been a Quaker born in Oxfordshire. There is the depiction of familial domesticity as a woman, Martha Braithwaite collects together her favourite hymns in a quiet season in the company of her “dear brother” and her “own precious children”. I have been employed some of my quiet hours during this confinement to the house in making a selection of some of my favourite hymns. The labour has been undertaken at the suggestion of my very dear brother William. … whether the hymns selected will ever be printed at present seems doubtful.
