Introduction	Misfortune witholds its affections from no man, and thus I cannot assert to have suffered more than most. There are those, however, who might debate the point, were they to have walked in my shoes, and traverse the miles that have passed beneath me. I was born in America, but while still a young boy my father transported his family to his native Ireland where I remained for many years. I have survived drought, illness and a failed marriage, but have been blessed with a son who, for the present, remains with his mother far away. And with those rudiments out of the way, I will leave the rest for another time.
