Introduction Hi there. My name is Michaela Laurie. I opened Wren’s Nest Studio in 2004 in what was once a potter’s workshop. The name comes from the name of our property which is located in southern New South Wales near Canberra, which is Australia’s capital city. We are fortunate to be home to many Superb Blue Fairy Wrens which are tiny, delicate and beautiful birds who regularly visit me throughout the day. I am a Paper Quilt Craft Artist. I began with creating mixed media collages and large montages over 20 years ago but have also dabbled with printmaking, pastels, water colour and painting. But I always come back to paper and have a huge collection of papers – both new and vintage from all over the world. I began experimenting with sewing papers together in February 2004 & developed my own form of quilting with paper. This paper craft incorporates traditional and modern designs, crazy quilting and appliqué and also draws on techniques and ideas used in embroidery and beading. My Paper Quilts are often embellished with buttons, crystals, pearls, found objects and charms of wood or metal. I adore colour and the way it can be combined in an infinite variety of ways.
