Introduction | Land conservation has been my game for 50 years. I was raised in farm country where I now live, had a career in medicine (OB-Gyn), and served on local non-profit boards (Sierra Club, Audubon, Rivers Alliance, Salem Land Trust), was elected to the town Planning and Zoning Commission, ran unsuccessfully for Congress, and studied natural history as an amateur bird-watcher. Saving habitats and managing them for biodiversity has been the most rewarding work of my life, and has required a knowledge of the community, its land, people and politics. What I have learned may be of value to others, so this blog has been initiated to pass some of what I have learned on to those who wish to play this game to win. If you play, I hope you feel as rewarded as I have been. Driving past conserved lands that teem with wildlife, knowing that without the work of our partnerships the land would be decimated, gives a feeling of satisfaction that has no monetary equivalent. |
