IntroductionMy Warwick PL blog is now 'defunct' but I have a new blog: www.blogaboutwriting.wordpress.com I’ve enjoyed writing stories and poems since childhood but I only started to write more seriously when I enrolled in a Creative Writing evening class in Birmingham back in the late ‘eighties. Since then, I’ve been on plenty of courses (I’m a bit of a writing course junkie) and for the past 3 years I've taught Creative Writing at Solihull College. I firmly believe that, although it helps if you have an ear for language and a love of words, a lot of writing techniques and skills can be learned. The poem ‘Kettle’, which won the Warwick Words’ poetry competition in 2006 (and with it, the title of Poet Laureate for 2006/7), was written during a poetry class lead by Midlands-based poet Roz Goddard, who set the class the challenge of writing from the point of view of an inanimate object. I get my inspiration for writing from life – from things that happen, from overhead comments, or from places that I visit.
