Introduction Words for, with and about music. Libretto for 'Silver Birch', Roxanna Panufnik's opera for Garsington 2017 ("powerful and poetic" - The Times). Latest novel 'Ghost Variations', based on the Schumann Violin Concerto's 1930s rediscovery. Performing narrated concerts based on it ("highly moving" - Birmingham Post) and others. Next projects: novel 'Meeting Odette' and new narrated concert 'Being Mrs Bach'. 28 years in music journalism. I'm not "a blogger". I'm a writer who has a blog. Favorite Movies Les enfants du Paradis, La Strada, The Lives of Others, Apocalypse Now, Cinema Paradiso, Jean de Florette/Manon des Sources, Annie Hall, Manhattan, Zelig, Un Coeur en Hiver, Heimat, most Eric Rohmer, most Louis Malle, pretty much all the Ealing Comedies and a lot of Powell & Pressburger.
Favorite Music Classical from 16th to 21st centuries. World music & jazz in many permutations. Secret passions include Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon, the Beatles and REM. Championing women composers in particular, including Fanny Mendelssohn, Pauline Viardot, Lili Boulanger, Elizabeth Maconchy, 'Poldowski' and many others.
