Introduction I received my LEAN SYSTEMS CERTIFICATION from the University of Kentucky, as well as my LEAN OFFICE CERTIFICATION from the University of Michigan. I am currently attending the University of Guelph part-time to complete my studies in Psychology. Lean manufacturing is a management philosophy which focuses on the reduction and the elimination of the seven wastes. The idea/philosophy is that if muda (waste) is removed, the result will be better product, quicker and cheaper. Lean differs from traditional manufacturing because it focuses on the customer, and the demand that the customer gives your company (rather than overproducing just to "wait and see" if someone is going to buy your product). To get rid of waste, Lean has many tools to offer companies; Value stream mapping current/future state, kaizen (continuous improvement activity), poka-yoke (mistake-proofing), 5S (Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize, Sustain), TPM (total productive maintenance), SMED (set-up reduction) etc.
