IntroductionI am a 61 year old man who survived a sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) on April 6, 2008. The "signature feature" of an SCA is the stopping of the heart and injury to the brain. This injury is called an ANOXIC BRAIN INJURY (ABI) due to the loss of blood and oxygen. I was without a heartbeat for at least 15 minutes. The stopping of the heart distinguishes the SCA from a heart attack. If you should wonder whether I was dead, the answer is yes. Now, just looking at me is not going to reveal that fact, but I often feel like a zombie and have been treated like one. Understanding Sudden Cardiac Arrest, including Anoxic Brain Injury, is my greatest interest, today. Most important is the way that Life and Death are brought together, face to face, before the eyes and heart of anyone who witnesses, or has, an SCA. I would like to encourage everyone: Stand beside those who defend Life. Death is no friend. For more about my daily life as an SCA survivor, see the links listed at the bottom of this page.
