| Introduction | In 2006, I left my job as local reporter in our small seaside town to home school my daughter, then aged 9. I can still remember sitting at the kitchen table, the day after my final day in employment, thinking: 'What now?' Home schooling wasn't a problem; we were loving every minute of it! But how was I going to make money to help pay the mortgage? I had come from an artisitc background; my mother was a semi-professional artist, but I had had no art training at all - though I had inherited some of her skills. I soon discovered I loved design. At first I made all kind of things in my chosen media: Textiles. Then, one day, I made a cat; a Ship's Cat, with odd vintage button eyes and a surly mouth and I knew I had found the thing I most wanted to make. Now I sell my collectable cats on Folksy. They're made from recycled materials, vintage buttons and interesting fabrics. I also recently started making bow ties and I lease a small allotment, where I plan to grow cut flowers and herbs as a little enterprise, which I hope will eventually boost our income. I plan to share with you my experiences, views and dreams - and no doubt a few scrapes here and there! |
