Introduction | I have written over 55 published books for children. Most are natural history. But I tend toward lyrical language and wordplay in both fiction and nonfiction. You are likely to find me writing at my computer, speaking at a school/conference, watching fish on a coral reef, or watching migrating birds in a prairie or rain forest. I am looking forward to joining with the other terrific nonfiction authors on this blog. |
Interests | Sound recording, songwriting, photography, birdwatching, science in general, rain forests and tropical travel, native plant gardening |

Favorite Music | Bird song, especially thrushes and warblers in spring. Human song: Chris Thile, Seldom Scene, all kinds of bluegrass, classical guitar, any song with clever lyrics, a touch of Fado, vocals ranging from Bobbie McFerrin to Ella Fitzgerald |
Favorite Books | Anything by Tamora Pierce. Other fantasy authors, too. |
