| Introduction | Greetings and Mabuhay! As a first generation Filipino-American, I've spent nearly half of my life in the United States. In other words, I could tell you just about anything about America, but very little about my parent’s own culture or how vastly different present day Philippines is compared to the one they left behind. In late fall of 2007, I fell in love and married a Filipina who I met shortly after she relocated to the U.S. In an ironic twist of fate, we were married in 2008, then by April 2009 we made the decision to move to Manila where my story begins. The experience has given me a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to rediscover my own heritage in this tropical land of contrasting colors, bustling people, and vibrant energy. I feel privileged and proud to be sharing my adventure with you, and hope my unique Fil-Am perspective will open your hearts and minds to what it is like – and unlike – to be outside one's own comfort zone. As an American, I hope to give you an honest, up close and personal look at the Philippines, Asia, and perhaps an even greater appreciation for your particular place in the world. |
