| Introduction | I am the adult child of a narcissist (ACoN), and a professional writer with an avid and insatiable interest in psychology and psychopathology. This blog is about personality disorders, toxic families and how to deal with them, how to recognise an abuser (and the many types of abuse at their disposal, and the signs of abuse in their victim/s). It looks at the ostensible exponential rise of narcissism, psychopathy and sociopathy (and the subtle differences between all three), and explores anger and forgiveness, therapy options and resolution, plus theories about the genesis of mental illness (e.g. the ‘double bind’ theory of schizophrenia). It also examines some of the insidious manipulation techniques employed by the most disordered, damaged and abusive people we encounter in our lives, and who some of us are unfortunate enough to be related to or become intimately involved with. This blog is also about setting ourselves free from the toxic ties that bind us to these people, and addressing our various negative ways of thinking, behaving, reacting and interacting as a result of these devastating and harmful relationships. |
