| Introduction | The Mountain Book Club was started in 1991 with 9 members: Andrea, Janeen, Lucille, Antoinette, Debbie, Frances, Kathy L., Kathy K. and Lois. The first meeting was held at Andrea's home and we chose "Cold, Sassy Tree" as our first book. At the time, we called ourselves the Book Guild, but it never really seemed to stick. We elected Kathy L. as president and Janeen as secretary. Our membership was limited to women only. After two or three years we decided to admit men and so we added Dan, Brian and Brad. Leah was one of the early members of the book club. In late 1994 Nancy and Eric joined our group. We meet once a month at each other's homes. We take turns presenting a selection of books from which the group chooses the one to read for the next month. That book is then discussed at the next meeting, led by the one who had presented it. We read 10 books a year, reserving August for a "field trip" to a site related to one of our books (such as the New Almaden Quick Silver Mine for Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner) and December for a dinner and awards ceremony. We have a set of By Laws that govern our book club which are available on request. |
