IntroductionI am a designer-educator whose interest lies in establishing a critical framework for fashion design teaching. My work stresses the importance of cognition and process in design pedagogy in conjunction with the use of traditional and innovative skills involved in creating the design artifact. I am currently a fashion design practitioner and lecturer, teaching design, patternmaking and garment construction. My post-graduate work explored nostalgia, memory and the designer’s sense of place. Areas of research include mid 20th century popular culture and clothing, and wearing as performance. I have written and published on collecting and wearing vintage clothing, and contemporary fashion design pedagogy.
InterestsMid-20th century design especially clothing and textiles; sewing ephemera from 1939-1959; vintage patterns; fashion design; I collect lingerie and corsetry from the 40s and 50s...I also make lingerie I lecture at university - teaching fashion design - which I love. I teach a variety of subjects including patternmaking and garment construction design development and cultural studies. I am intrigued by patternmaking of the 40s and 50s and collect dress patterns fashion magazines sewing ephemera buttons and fabric from this era.
Favorite moviesfim noir - I love Dead Reckoning; the big Steal; Gilda; Mildred Pierce; The big Heat; In a Lonely Place; Double Indemnity...and more. I'm a massive Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis fan - all of their movies are unbelievable.
Favorite musicI am obsessed with mid-20th century design and music. I love real records on a turntable and the sound of valve radio. Female big band jazz vocalists like (early) Doris Day Anita O'Day Helen Forrest and Ella Fitzgerald make me wish I could sing...I was lucky enough to meet two of my vocal heroines in 2005 at Greenbay - rockabilly queens Wanda Jackson and Janis Martin. Rockabilly has been part of my life for twenty five years now, and I'm also a fan of 40s and 50s country music, western swing, vintage hawaiian 50s R&B and Elvis will always be King...
Favorite booksBlueprints of Fashion - pattern collectibles.
