IntroductionEric Goldscheider lived in Kenya as a student in 1981 and again from 1995 to 1998 as the academic director of a study abroad program. He and his wife Debbi Friedlander serendipitously visited an AIDS orphanage at the moment a baby girl was being discharged for reasons of good health. Eric wrote the adoption story for the Boston Globe Magazine (June 6, 1999). He lives in Amherst, Massachusetts and writes for The Boston Globe, The New York Times and other publications. His media appearances include: NECN (Newsnight with Jim Braudy); WGBH-TV (Greater Boston with Emily Rooney); WRKO (Scott Allen Miller Show and John DePetro Show); WHMP (Morning NewsWatch w/ guest host Tom Vannah); WILD (Nation of Islam Hour of Power with Don Muhammad). Eric blogs on criminal justice issues. Earlier he was a news reporter, a traveler, a theater technician, a carpenter, and a bicycle messenger in New York City, where he grew up. He attributes many formative experiences to his Omi (grandmother), a woman of many dimensions who insisted that he learn German at a young age.
