About me

Introduction The earliest records indicate that our family had its beginnings on the Island of Barbados. Where there is a "Sargeant" village. At some point, probably in the 1870's Alexander Sargeant left Barbados for Nevis, where he fathered three children, James,Irene, and Alexander Sargeant Jr. Like many people of the Eastern Caribbean our ancestors would leave behind their little islands to join in the great migration in search of a broader range of opportunity in the Northeastern United States. Unlike the multitude of immigrants who disembarked at Ellis Island, our family, led by James Sargeant and his younger brother Alexander, were "processed" in New Haven Connecticut in 1914. They formed a community there consisting of other, closely related Kittitian and Nevesian families including the Huggins, the Hanleys, the Bakers, Pembertons and the Gilfillans. Many would remain in New Haven, where today we are still represented in great numbers. Others moved on, settling in Brooklyn, New Jersey and other places. We of the Leeward" islands have made great contributions to this nation and continue to be 'Movers and Shakers" today. What is your family's experience.? Share it with us!!!
