Introduction I am a mom and dietitian who started this blog when I was a full-time doctoral student. I finished my program in August 2008. My dissertation focused on farm to school programs which are programs designed to connect students to their food and to bring locally grown food to the school meals program. Why do I care? I want something different for my daughter Caroline. There is so much that we don't know about the conventional food system and what we do know is frightening. For example, 20 percent of pesticides that have been approved for use in farming are listed by the Environmental Protection Agency as carcinogenic to humans. In addition, farm populations and the number of farms in the U.S. are disappearing at an alarming rate. If we don't support our local farmers today, we not only risk losing them but also all of the environmental and social benefits that they provide. This blog is a way to document my experience preparing meals for Caroline that are nutritious and that are made with ingredients grown/raised without harmful chemicals and sourced as close to home (Ann Arbor, Michigan) as possible.
