| Interests | What interests me now is how people--their agonies, their joys, their distortions, their courage or cowardice, their moods--shape their work, whatever it may be. And how their work shapes everything else. One funny, smiling breakfast-shift waitress lifts a depressed real estate agent's spirits so that she sells a house that day, to nice people who turn out to be huge PTA supporters who raise money to provide after school art programs which inspire, say, two kids out of each year's 50 or so, to form a self-image that includes art school instead of half-hearted gang membership, one of whom will illustrate a good book for children that people will remember with a little smile, for three generations. Or twenty. |
