| Introduction | My life changed overnight when in June 2010 I was rushed into hospital with severe abdominal pain. Lying in A&E I muttered to the doctors 'you have to get me better, I'm doing an Ironman in 8 weeks'. Their faces said it all... there would be no Ironman. That abdominal pain turned out to be life-threatening peritonitis caused by perforation of my colon and I needed emergency surgery. During the following 2 years I had five operations on my bowel, the last one in November 2012 to create an ileostomy (colostomy bag). I write this blog to raise awareness of ileostomy surgery and living an active life. For me, my stoma is simply a challenge to overcome - much like a marathon or any other race. It's not a barrier, nor is it a disability - and I'm not about to let it stop me doing anything. After all, it's just a bag. |
