| Introduction | Ralph Thomas Kappler / Tomaš Kappa founded in 2002 in London the HALO ENERGY communications network. Among other cross-border initiatives, HALO introduced renewable energy projects to the Lusatia coal mining region in South-East Germany before anyone else. Previously he directed at GCI Group London the European corporate communications programme for British Airways where he was in charge of commercial campaigns and crisis communications. Prior to this he directed the financial services communications of the global business information provider Datamonitor in London. He obtained a master's degree in comparative religion at Rijksuniversiteit te Leiden in the Netherlands. He provided communications support to EU officials in Brussels. Tomaš Kappa grew up in the culturally vibrant and resource rich Sorbian Lusatia region. Today, the Sorbian civilization and Lusatia are under threat from excessive brown coal mining.
