Introduction The Sheridan Elder Research Centre (SERC), opened in September 2003, is a unique environment for the conduct of applied research into areas of practical concern and immediate relevance to older Canadians. SERC develops innovative approaches and creative interdisciplinary partnerships to focus on enhancing the lives of Canadian seniors. In the next few generations, the worldwide proportion of older persons will increase ten fold to 1 in 4. By 2021, Ontario will be home to close to three million seniors – more than double the number in 1998. With this rate of growth, the need to translate applied research into practical strategies and approaches that meet the challenges and opportunities presented by this imminent boom is critical. Creating possibilities that enhance the quality of life for older adults – not just in our surrounding communities, but everywhere – is what you’ll discover at the Sheridan Elder Research Centre.
