Introduction	In my culture it was a crime to talk about oneself, but I will do it anyway. I was born in the bundu, where snakes lurked in our garden. My father woke me to show me Sputnik moving like a bright star through the heavens. The year I was born, a man-eating lion swallowed a night watchman on the main street of my town. You can find the place on Google Earth today. Change is happening at the speed of a satellite, yet so many things stay the same: that is what I find interesting about history. Catastrophes attract me. Crashes and panics are like highway pile-ups; it's sick to slow down and crane your neck to see, but I can't help it. I am curious.
