| Introduction | I work as a McKenzie Friend and provide assistance to people who decide, or who have no choice but, to represent themselves in court. My area of speciality is Family Law: divorce, separation, financial, consent orders, non-molestation & occupation orders, children, parental responsibility, contact orders, residence orders, etc. A McKenzie Friend, in its simplest form, is a non qualified legal advisor who can offer advice, support and assistance to ‘litigants in person’ (people not legally represented) in and out of court. The courts will often allow you to have a ‘friend’ sit with you in court to provide moral support, take notes, help with case papers, offer quiet advice on points of law, suggest issues that you may wish to raise in court and put forward questions that the you may wish to ask witnesses. This ‘friend’ may not speak in court, without the permission of the Judge, although in exceptional circumstances, this ‘right of audience’ (being able to speak for you in court, make submissions, examine witnesses, etc) may be granted. A McKenzie Friend can help if you: - Can't afford a lawyer. - Are going to court without a lawyer. - Are refused legal aid. |
