| Interests | Nakuthe, nakuthe, taxcamen...* I was a young, idealistic, organic green mother of three small daughters. They were breastfed, cloth diapered, never ate anything processed, canned, frozen. I got up at dawn to make fresh pasta, begin bread dough & jar fresh fruit from neighbor's trees & gardens. My front yard was an organic garden; filled with multiple varieties of tomatoes, peppers & other veggies. My backyard had an herb garden right out the kitchen door. There were radishes, potatoes, blackberries, rhubarb & various other food stuffs here & there. We had a worm farm in a container. Composting was a way of life. In one garden window, I had over 6 kinds of sourdough starters. African violets seedlings & rose cuttings were growing in the adjacent garden window. Preserves, marmalade, jams, jellies lined the shelves of a red book case in the dining room. Other shelves displayed over five different types of hand made soaps curing. This was 2 decades ago. Before it was trendy or anyone's life style choice. I have since lost the amazing kitchen, massive gardens, and I believe, the energy. I am still idealistic, but not so young. My ankles, knees, hips, back ache and swell and make things like kneeling to weed or tend to little plants very painful. I'd rather sleep until I absolutely MUST get out of bed. My youngest child, born less than a decade ago, has in fact eaten plenty of prepared foods, frozen meals, I doubt I have ever made him fresh pasta. I am sad about this. Now, after much upheavel and distress and loss, I am hoping to have found the motivation to return to a modified version of my former self. ~*~*~ * "long long ago, therefore it is so:"... my maternal grandparents's tribe, the Tigua of Ysleta del Sur began their ancient tales with this phrase, much like "Once upon a time.." |
