Favorite moviesDominic Carter’s Favorite Movies 🎬 Movies have always been more than entertainment to me—they’ve been windows into worlds, lessons in storytelling, and reminders of how powerful art can be. As a journalist and talk radio host, I live in the world of real events, facts, and politics. But when the lights go down and the screen comes alive, I find myself just like everyone else—laughing, crying, reflecting, and being inspired. Over the years, Hollywood has also been very good to me. I’ve had the privilege of appearing in films such as Inside Man (2006), Pride and Glory (2008), and Side Streets (1998). Each experience gave me a firsthand look at the incredible work that goes into telling stories on screen. Being on set with talented actors, directors, and crews deepened my appreciation for cinema as both craft and culture. It was an honor to be part of that world, and those moments remain some of the highlights of my career outside of journalism. When it comes to my personal favorites, I gravitate toward movies that combine powerful storytelling with unforgettable performances. Classics like The Godfather and Goodfellas speak to me not just because they’re brilliantly made, but because they explore loyalty, power, and the human condition in ways that resonate beyond the screen. I’m also a big admirer of socially impactful films like Malcolm X and 12 Years a Slave, which remind us of the struggles, history, and resilience of people who came before us. I also keep a personal “Top Five” list of films that never fail to inspire or entertain me: Scarface – A gritty story of ambition, survival, and downfall. American Gangster – A brilliant portrayal of power, corruption, and redemption. The Godfather – Timeless storytelling about family, loyalty, and legacy. Pulp Fiction – A masterpiece of dialogue, character, and unpredictability. Citizen Kane – The classic that defined modern filmmaking and narrative depth. And of course, I’ll never stop loving Rocky.
Favorite musicDominic Carter’s Favorite Music 🎶 Music has always been the soundtrack to my life. From my childhood in the Bronx to my years covering politics and hosting talk radio, music has been there every step of the way—lifting me up, giving me strength, and reminding me that no matter what challenges we face, there is always a rhythm to keep us moving forward. Growing up, I was surrounded by the soul, R&B, and gospel that defined so much of New York’s culture. Songs from legends like Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and Marvin Gaye weren’t just music—they were life lessons. Stevie taught us optimism, Aretha taught us respect, and Marvin gave us timeless truths about love and justice. Those voices filled my home and shaped the way I see the world. Hip-hop also played a major role in my story. Coming from the Bronx, I witnessed firsthand the birth of a genre that would go on to conquer the world. Artists like Grandmaster Flash, Run-D.M.C., Public Enemy, and later Jay-Z and Nas didn’t just make music—they told the stories of the streets, the struggles, and the survival that I knew so well. Hip-hop’s raw honesty has always resonated with me, and it remains a core part of my playlist. Of course, I’ve also always admired artists who pushed boundaries in other genres. Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett brought elegance and storytelling to their songs. Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen captured the pulse of America with lyrics that cut to the heart of our shared experiences. And when it comes to pure inspiration, nothing compares to the power of gospel music—songs of faith and resilience that kept me moving when times were hard. Today, my playlists are as diverse as my career. One day it might be Smokey Robinson reminding me of timeless Motown melodies, the next it’s Jay-Z or Kendrick Lamar speaking truth to power. And then there are days when I go back to The Temptations, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Luther Vandross—artists who never go out of style.
