IntroductionPaula L. Collins is "The Academic Artisan". Formerly Assistant Principal of the performing arts school that was once home to the world-famous Boys and Girls Choirs of Harlem, she holds a Doctorate of Education from Seton Hall University. After retirement, creating accessories became her passion. Abstract expressionist and jewelry artists such as Alexander Calder, Art Smith and Charles Lewton-Brain were influences. Sterling silver, copper and brass are primarily used to create the jewelry because of the complex and varied shadings that are naturally possible in these metals. Lightly sealed, yet malleable, the jewelry is created to further evolve through interaction with the wearer. In addition to designing and creating jewelry, Paula has studied jewelry design at Fashion Institute of Technology and is an adjunct assistant professor at The City College of New York. She encourages teachers to include the arts in education. Paula formerly served on the school committee for The Ailey School, which is a BFA collaborative between the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Fordham University and she also volunteered with the Lincoln Center Institute for the Arts in Education.
