Introduction	When I was a teenager, my career choice involved going to sea in the U.S. Merchant Marine. My ambitions were to sail all over the world and to attain the unlimited Master's license by age 30. I almost made it. I saw much of the world, and I upgraded my license to limited tonnage Master and unlimited Chief Mate. By age 30, a serious illness and a failing job market had taken their toll. I went ashore, pursued further education, and started a new career as a college librarian.
