Introduction | From the Brazilian Folklore series: Iara is an indigenous legend (originally from indigenous tribes of Northern Brazil, in the Amazon Forest region) of a mermaid with beautiful long black hair and brown eyes, and a voice that hypnotize and attract inadvertent men! But why did she become a mermaid? According to the legend, she was an indigenous of enviable beauty. Her siblings, envious of her beauty and warrior skills, tried to kill her. But due to her warrior skills she reverted the situation by killing her siblings. Afraid of being punished by her father (the Pajé and leader of the tribe) she ran away. Her father found her and the punishment for killing her siblings was to be thrown on the river to die. The fishes of the river, wanting to save that beautiful young woman, transformed her in a mermaid. Since then, she lives in the Amazon rivers attracting men, with her beautiful voice, to bring them to the bottom of the river. The only way to escape and get back to life is to search after a “Pajé” to get the cure. The name Iara/Yara comes from the indigenous term "Iuara", which means "the one who lives in the waters". |
