| Introduction | Rachel Buttig is the founder and president of the East St. Louis Dream Center. She began ministering in East St. Louis, IL in 1997. She was drawn to the city because of eight children she met at a camp. She began spending time with them on a regular basis. They lived in governement housing, called the John DeShields Housing Development. In 2000, she helped her church begin a sidewalk sunday school outreach in the neighborhod and continued to serve there. This program is still serving in East St. Louis today. She continued spending much of her free time with the people from the neighborhood. In 2005, she began a program for the teenagers. It began to grow and the John DeShields Neighborhood began to feel like home. God began stirring in her heart to move to the neighborhood in order to live among the people. In 2007, she moved there and lived in the neighborhood for four years. Also in 2007, the East St. Louis Dream Center was incorporated as a non-profit organization. The Dream Center currently has outreaches which serve teens and young men. We have a dream of having a thriving neighborhood center for this beautiful city. |
