Introduction Emmanuel House CDC is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to helping working-class families save and work their way out of poverty in a responsible & dignified manner. There are several locations/apartments or “houses” and each one operates the same way: Families pay regular rent—the majority of which goes into their own down-payment fund so we can help them buy their first home. Our Mission is “Breaking the Cycle of Working-Class Poverty through Homeownership” • Strengthening family stability through home ownership & savings; • Strengthening kids through expanded educational opportunities; • Strengthening communities by increasing ownership & investment in neighborhoods. Emmanuel House was originally named in memory of BRYAN EMMANUEL GUZMAN (1985-2006) who passed away in a tragic drowning accident in 2006. The project was started through an existing non-profit established in 2002, with which Bryan had been very involved—and to this day the original “Bryan House” continues to focus on serving the diverse population of refugees being resettled in Aurora, IL.
Interests We seek to eliminate the working-class poverty trap whereby low-income families are unable to access home-ownership or any other means of accumulating wealth—-nor are they able to provide access to higher education so their children will have an improved set of opportunities. This creates a generational cycle that is often impossible for families to break out of without assistance. “Intergenerational mobility” in the U.S. is amongst the worst in the world, but by providing the working poor with a pathway to home-ownership, families can become 12x wealthier; communities 4x more stable and children 116% more likely to graduate college.
