IntroductionChristopher Porché West lives and works in one of New Orleans‚ oldest neighborhoods, Bywater, founded in 1809. A native of California with deep maternal roots in Louisiana, he first came to the city in the late 1970’s on a fellowship from the University of California at Santa Cruz to study a pre-Civil War sub-culture, the free people of color. Captivated by the city, he returned in 1982 to live and undertake a self-directed photo-documentary on the life and cultural activity of the African-American community, from which he developed an exhibit for the Jean Lafitte National Park Visitors‚ Center in the Vieux Carre‚. Porché West is also one of the only photographers to photograph more than 40 members of the Mardi Gras Indians in a controlled studio environment, forever preserving the proud heritage of this group. Porché West continues to document and preserve the culture and life of New Orleans and its people. and by appointment at the photographer’s studio, 3201 Burgundy Street corner Louisa Street 504.947.3880.
