Crazy Rich Asians (a modern romantic comedy rich in emotions and Asian in its sensibility and values) 4. 41 (a low low budget, Australian, indie time travel flick about how we need to be super careful with the people that we love and the choices that we make in this short amount of time that we have) 5. The Grand Seduction (a beautiful and humorous story about human pride that takes place in Newfoundland) 6. Interstellar (perhaps the best sci-fi film of all time, and certainly the one most rooted in actual physics) 7. Once (a beautiful, micro-budgeted musical about two lonely musicians who come together in a story you could write on the back of a postage stamp) 8. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (an adventurous, visually stunning comedy-drama about living vs. dreaming, worth seeing for the cinematography alone, which frames nearly every shot like a perfectly composed photograph of the likes you'd see in, say, Life Magazine, where Walter works in the movie) 9. Signs (Shyamalan's most suspenseful film, which may just “restore your faith” in storytelling) 10. Waking Ned Devine (a simultaneously funny and heart-warming story about friendship, worth the eulogy alone) 11. We Bought a Zoo (the amazing true story of a young family, a broken-down zoo, and the animals, and people, that change their lives forever) 12. Yesterday (A beautifully done surprise cameo brings the narrative full circle, and it says a lot about The Beatles' cultural legacy.) 13. Your Name (a visually beautiful film that represented a watershed moment for anime) |
