Introduction My introduction to photography came in high school when I was given a twin-lens reflex to shoot a basketball game. I hated photography. The next encounter came in the Marine Corps when I was given a 4x5 Graflex to learn how to shoot a photo story. I really hated photography. Not until my first duty station when I was handed a 35mm Nikon F, did I experience what was beginning to happen in the profession of photojournalism – the single-lens reflex – and it was love at first sight. Honorably discharged in 1971, I started my educational tab on the G.I.Bill at the University of Oklahoma, completing a b.a. in professional writing (1973) and an m.a. in human relations (1975) before running out of government-issued tuition. My career in newspaper photography unfolded like a road trip, starting at the Pampa [Texas] Daily News, skipping over Oklahoma to the Carthage [Missouri] Press, back to the Daily Oklahoman/Oklahoma City Times, and then north to the Barrington Press (six weekly newspapers in the Chicago Area) as photo editor . . . all within five years. In 1980 I joined my current newspaper and the road trip career came to a screeching halt. I was home.
