| Introduction | In Smyth County, VA, between the Iron Mountain ridge and the Walker Mountain ridge, two smaller ridges: Buchanan Mountain to the South, Glade Mountain to the North. Part of Glade is White Rock: quartzite boulders on the peak big enough for adventurous climbing. The creek comes down the valley--East--going above and below ground, narrowly missing National Forest and the Applachian Trail, through logging cuts, a summer camp, past the ruins of an old blast furnace, and finally a farm with four houses and a dairy and beef operation. I grew up in the valley. I make my living as a singer of Appalachian songs and ballads. |
