Introduction“Life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans” John Lennon. Being a DJ has taken me on a journey of discovery across cultures and through a variety of musical genres. I now feel as if I not only have an intimate knowledge of the very soul that inspired artistes across the years, but I also have a very real understanding of what people of diverse backgrounds and outlooks want when they are out clubbing. I think it was that innate understanding that gave me so many memorable gigs in clubs around Mumbai’s suburbs, working with Esoteric Acoustics. The ability to gauge an audience, know instinctively what it is feeling and what it is looking for – that is my forte. My console – an extension of myself Everyone sometimes wishes they had more limbs to do more things. I’m just glad for my console – it is an extension of who I am and it truly expresses the way I feel. It defines everything that motivates me, that gets the blood pumping in my veins and rocks my audience.
Favorite moviesContd from About Me: My experience – a medley of different musical encounters My career has taken me back and forth across cities. My first encounter with Hyderabad was when I was invited to be the resident Deejay for The Pyramid at the City’s exclusive Country Club. I deem it my privilege to have been instrumental in introducing Hyderabad to the clubbing culture, infusing my music with the flavours of Mumbai’s vibrant night life. I followed the beat, as it were, back to Mumbai, to work with DJ Whosane and DJ Asad on a breakthrough project, Audiophile, along with DJ Luke Kenny… rocking crowds at some of the best clubs like Sheetal, Wild Orchid, Go Bananas and Wig Wam. How it began… Over the past two decades since I first Deejayed at The Cellar (The Oberoi, Mumbai), I’ve come to believe that DJs are born, not made. And I believe that because, while I had another career path mapped out, I was inexplicably drawn into the world of music and slipped effortlessly into the groove.
Favorite musicContd: Highlight: I spin everything from Desi(Bollywood) and Hip Hop to House (Commercial, Club and Funky House), Trance, Retro (60s, 70s, 80s and 90s) and Classic Rock. Hyderabad lured me back, and in between countless Corporate launch parties and being a resident DJ for clubs like Passport, Diva and Where Else, I had the exciting opportunity to conceptualise a Club dedicated to rock music lovers. It was called 'Easy Rider', and I Deejayed there until a landmark assignment took me to the prestigious India Club in Dubai, where I am still invited to perform. I believe that knowledge shared is experience gained. Sharing my experience with new DJs, like DJ Amyth, has been a part of who I am and what I stand for. For me, collaborations have been extremely rewarding as they have helped me evolve. I’ve also realised that music has limitless potential. There are so many different flavours and innumerable facets to music. I’m a restless person, always trying to discover some new dimension to what I do. That’s how I developed the brand ‘UnDesi’ – my special take on Bollywood music. ‘UnDesi’ has caught on like wildfire, and has its own growing following.
Favorite bookscontd: Highlight: I think if you have a passion for music, the rhythm takes you in the direction you are meant to go. At least that’s the way it has been for me. What I’m looking for An audience that needs to be revived with the right kind of beat. I have one of the largest collections of music and my joy lies in sharing it. My best thrill is getting behind my console and watching people as the rhythm works its magic on them. Where I see myself in the future People often ask me where I see myself in the future and my answer is straightforward and simple – I see myself still discovering new ways to keep an audience grooving!
