| Introduction | Cats I Know is Kaori Mitsushima. Kaori's paintings, illustrations, and sound collages are inspired by both the animals and plants around her and classical images from Japanese and Western art. Born in 1979, Kaori grew up in Tokyo and then lived in Berlin, Prague, and New York City. She currently lives in the small town of Oberlin, Ohio, with her filmmaker husband and their three cats. In the past two years, she has self-published two zines that feature her ink drawings -- Question Marks (2011) and Cats I Know/Cat Dream (2010) -- along with collaborative works -- My Shadow is a Cat and Rose-Eaters -- that combine poetry and art. She has joined several group exhibitions in Japan, the US and UK since 2009. Presently she works as an animator and graphic designer for Art+Practice: an independent film production company. Her favorite animals are house cats and she has been a francophile for more than a decade. |
