| Introduction | Charles Ferrell, born in Detroit, is a detailed pencil artist. Ferrell’s artistic talents were evident from childhood and augmented through art training at Cranbrook School, Amherst College and University of Michigan. Ferrell uses off-white archival 90-100 pound 18×24 and 22×30 Strathmore quality paper, Faber Castell 9000 Series and Pitt Pure Graphite Pencils, Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils, Utrecht Workable Fixative and non-abrasive erasers. His preparation includes raja yoga meditation and filling his work environment with jazz, incense, and natural lighting. Ferrell’s techniques involves line drawing, hatching, crosshatching, random hatching, stippling, blending and rapid random layering strokes of broad graphite sticks and razor sharp F, 2H, 5H, 2B-5B, and 7B pencils to create details and gradients of values balanced with the appropriate use of white space. Ferrell's artistic goal is to infuse his drawings with life-energy and transferable emotion. His work is focused on the themes of musical, political and spiritual freedom.
