| Introduction | I work with representational forms in the landscape to make them known only to me; it is this romantic view of the land and space I hold deep inside. My work vacillates between the world of representational landscape and abstract painting. It is my hope that the viewer is moved between that which is real and intangible. I like thinking about these contradictions by playing with the foreground and background—a rush from foreground to the distance fundamentally alters the relationship to the scene by physically juxtaposing disparate spaces. I use the landscape as a language of discovery in my work. I pick out pieces of the landscape— certain colors and shapes. I interpret my paintings as I work; I make decisions and put paint down. Each mark reacts to the next—adding, subtracting, inserting, overlapping—keeping in mind that the painting is always an object first. comments, questions-- amwoodworth@gmail.com |
