IntroductionThis spot was previously left empty because our focus was on the school, but with Bill’s death many have asked to know more of him, how we came here: We met aboard a boat in 1974. Bill had been a Marine during WWII, said he'd since dreamed of sailing back to the Pacific. I lived on a boat, knew it was the life I wanted, so we built Pilar, a 38’ gaff ketch. Bill’s attitude: “It is more important we do it TOGETHER than how well it is done.” It took 9 happy years to launch her--and 7 more to leave Calif--simply because we loved the Process more than Attaining a Goal. In our cruising life we visited the remote islands of Mangareva, Caroline Island, Kapingamarangi, but returning to the Solomons was most rewarding and fifty-four years after Bill first stepped ashore to fight the Japanese, we dropped anchor at Peleliu. With Bill’s dream achieved, we came to the Philippines uncertain what was next. Our simple life aboard Pilar still satisfied, but Bill now dreamed of building small boats and I longed for a studio...so space was found ashore...the children came (that story is in the blog)...and thus we continued to stay.
