| Introduction | Stephania Byrd is a native of Indiana and moved to northeast Ohio in1996. She did her M.A. in poetry and post graduate study in urban education at Cleveland State University. She has tenure and is an assistant professor at Lakeland Community College. She is a published poet whose work has appeared in American Voice, Kenyon Review, Cave Canem Anthology IV, and Eclipsing a Nappy New Millenium. Her interest in the slave narrative as a literary trope began with her grandmother's oral recounting of the family's history. She believes that 18th and 19th century American narratives can play an integral part in engaging the students in K-12 and in higher education in writing across the curriculum. |
