IntroductionI am an adult adoptee and a birthmother who didn't realize until meeting my birthmother in 1987 at age 24 that there were severe mental illnesses in my genes. My birthmother suffered from bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and possibly other illnesses for most of her adult life. In 1991, she couldn't take the pain anymore and slipped out a 13-story window at Columbia University. I only knew her for four years, but those years were filled with tension, frustration and confusion because of her illnesses and my inability to deal with them very well. I found out from my birthfather's brother that there was mental illness on that side of the family, as well. It's a miracle I'm as sane as I am, although I have had my moments. I prayed the son I had given up for adoption in 1982 wouldn't inherit such illnesses, but I when I found him through Facebook in October of 2008, I discovered he had, indeed. Although we were able to communicate via Facebook and email for a few glorious weeks, I have not heard from him in about a year-and-a-half now. We never spoke on the phone and I don't know if we'll ever meet now. It's heart-breaking and totally out of my control.
