| Introduction | Currently serving in the Peace Corps in Ecuador, Marisa is an artist, administrator, and social entrepreneur. Founder and executive director of Starting Artists, Inc. a Brooklyn-based community arts center, Marisa has held positions at: CARE, the Alliance for Children, Teen Ink, NYS Arts, APERTURE, and the Hearst Foundations. Marisa has received fellowships or scholarships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Brown University, Americans for the Arts, Columbia University, and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. Marisa was awarded the YoutActionNet Global Fellowship in 2008/9. During her 2 years of service in Ecuador Marisa has helped to commercialize a local female artisan cooperative selling nearly $20,000 in jewelry made of recycled materials to benefit low-income women on Ecuador's coast. In addition, Marisa secured funding from Starbucks and Disney to establish an art and design center in conjunction with a rural youth foundation where she taught photography, graphic design, video editing, and leadership. |
